La ley dice que los servicios y apoyos ayudan a las personas con discapacidades del desarrollo a vivir de la misma manera que viven las personas sin discapacidades. La ley no dice que se brinden servicios solo a personas que necesitan un poco de ayuda para vivir de manera independiente. La Ley Lanterman brinda oportunidades para que los adultos, sin importar el nivel de su discapacidad del desarrollo, vivan en casas que poseen o alquilan.
